There are a couple of checks you need to perform to get an idea of how well it’s going to work for you. Have a look at our review below in order to avoid disappointment.

In order for you to use a MagicJack, a computer (desktop or laptop) equipped with a high speed internet connection and an ordinary telephone is needed. You can also use a headphone/mic if you prefer.

Because the signal is sent over the internet, you don’t need a landline or existing phone service of any type.

The MagicJack is plugged into the USB port on your computer and you then plug an ordinary phone line into the MagicJack and within a few seconds you’re set to go.

MagicJack will work with Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 or any Intel based Mac. It does not require a particularly fast computer or one with huge amounts of memory. Even 256 Mb of ram is sufficient.

What is required, however, is a quality high speed internet connection and of particular importance, high upload speeds. To get consistently clear uninterrupted voice quality you should have 500 Kbps upload capacity.

As the upload capacity falls below that 500 mark, voice quality will suffer.

But speed isn’t everything. It needs to be fast and the Quality of Signal must also be up to snuff.  If this is not present then conversations will cut in and out.

Some of you may not be comfortable with getting rid of your landline but if you travel a lot or work takes you to places with poor and or expensive phone service, MagicJack can be a Godsend.

We know it’s not going to work for everyone, all the time.  Having said that our QoS test wasn’t all that great and yet we can carry on a conversation with very little problem. It’s not crystal clear (there’s a bit of crackling) but it is easily clear enough for both parties to hear each other. There is no having to ask the caller to repeat what was just said.

Pros

• If you don’t or can’t use a phone, call directly from your computer with a headset or, like we do, use the built in mic on your laptop.
• Set up is quick with a computer running Windows XP, Vista, or 7; or a Mac with OS 10.4 or higher (Intel processor).
• Send a MagicJack to friends and family when they are travelling or living away from home and they can make and receive free calls anywhere in the US and Canada.
• Quick and easy setup: True “plug n play” in seconds.
• The $19.95 yearly fee includes unlimited long and local distance calling.
• You will be issued a new phone number which won’t be listed in any phone book.
• Although not all area codes are available this can work to your advantage. If your mom lives in Florida and you live in Alaska, you could buy a MagicJack with a Florida area code and talking to you would be a local call for her and a free call for you. Or, you could buy her a MagicJack for Mother’s Day

Cons

• You will be issued a new phone number which won’t be listed in any phone book.
• If you have no internet you have no phone.
• Not all area codes are available, which isn’t a big deal except that some people calling you from a landline may incur long distance charges to their bill. (see the last point above, in Pros)
• MagicJack won’t work on satellite internet services.
